FENG SHUI OF SINGAPORE FLYER, MARINA BAY SINGAPORE
The Singapore Flyer is currently the highest Ferris Wheel in the World. The magnificent Ferris Wheel is located in Singapore, on the southeast tip of the Marina Centre reclaimed land, it comprises a 150 m (492 ft) diameter wheel, built over a three-story terminal building which houses shops, bars and restaurants, and offers broad views of the city centre and beyond to about 45 km (28 mi), including the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, as well as Johor, Malaysia.
It reaches 42 stories high, with a total height of 165 m (541 ft), and is 5 m (16 ft) taller than the Star of Nanchang and 30 m (98 ft) taller than the London Eye. There are 28 capsules built for the Ferris Wheel and each capsule is capable to take 28 passengers. Once the Ferris Wheel was completed on 11th of February and was opened to the public on 1st March 2008.
Initially, the Ferris Wheel was turning in a counter-clockwise direction when viewed from Marina Centre. However, on 4th of August 2008, its direction was changed to clock-wise direction.
The sights seen from the wheel are very beautiful. The wheel will turn for a duration of 38 minutes.
International Feng Shui Master Tham paid this Ferris Wheel a visit during one of his trips to Singapore when he was invited by one of his many clients for his consultancy services. Master Tham said that the Ferris Wheel’s location is good. The Chi of the location is very lively. However, the way of collecting the Wealth Chi is not good because the Ferris was built facing the wrong direction with a difference of 10 degrees to collect the Wealth Chi. Master Tham will continue to explain to you the Feng Shui of this prominent Ferris Wheel.
GOOD LUCK FLOWING OUT INTO THE SEA
The Ferris Wheel was turning inside towards the Marina Bay. Master Tham said that the rotation direction of the Ferris Wheel towards the bay could help to converge good Chi flow but will not benefit the bay completely. Master Tham literally said, ‘In ancient Chinese Feng Shui, it is considered good luck if water (Shui in Mandarin) is poured onto the land (Tu in Mandarin). Then only fruits will grow on the land. However, it depends on various factors like the composition balance of these two elements.’ Master Tham further explains that Singapore had been doing things the other way round.
In Singapore, land was never sufficient and the government of Singapore is using sands to expand the territory of Singapore. Singapore has been importing sand for years and its territory has increased by over 20% in the last half century, but sand imports are now threatening the regional ecosystem and harming its economy. Singapore is today the world’s largest importer of sand, literally the foundation of the tiny state’s extraordinary economic growth.
But with other countries in the region, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, banning sand exports, reclaiming more land has become a difficult task for this tiny island city-state. At least legally – there are some accusations that sand smuggling is making up the shortfall.
Master Tham said that wealth had been pouring out of Singapore because of this concept. Master Tham said ‘Feng Shui is about Land, Water and Air (Wind). If land (sand) is poured into the sea, it is not auspicious as the elements will be unbalanced. This disrupts the Good Chi of Marina Bay Island and the Ferris Wheel.’

According to Master Tham, The Ferris Wheel was sitting on Xing Direction facing the Ying Direction (Various directions can be found on the Chinese Luo Pan Compass). This direction of the Ferris Wheel could not be benefited completely as the direction is a Gen Kua (one of The Eight Trigrams in Feng Shui principles). To make things simple, the Ferris Wheel has a supportive mountain at Xing direction. To intensify the good Chi and in order to harmonize the Yin and Yang energy, the Ferris Wheel had to turn its direction facing 10 degrees more to the left side. The current Feng Shui is not extremely auspicious as it was built wrongly of just only 10 degrees. That’s the reason why a lot of problems and troubles that actually happened at the Ferris Wheel there. The Ferris Wheel was reported to have several breakdowns. In July 2008 the Flyer was stopped because of a minor fault in the braking system. On 4th of December 2008, the wheel was stuck for nearly five hours due to bad weather and some 70 people were stranded. On 23rd of December 2008, the wheel stopped moving and trapped 173 passengers for about six hours. The breakdown was caused by a short circuit and fire in the Flyer's wheel control room, which cut off the air-conditioning in the wheel. Eleven passengers were evacuated via a sling-like device from a few of the capsules, and those stranded were given food and drink. The wheel restarted nearly seven hours after it had stopped and two people were hospitalized. At 1 pm on 18 July 2010, the ride was shut after one of its electrical cables supplying power to the air-conditioning systems was struck by lightning, affecting the air-conditioning system. Thereafter, the management evacuated the some 200 passengers and stopped the wheel. The Flyer was re-opened on 20 July 2010 at 2 pm after repair works were completed.
Master Tham explained that it is very important for a Feng Shui Master to thoroughly investigate the Feng Shui of a particular place before advising other people about it. A minor mistake like the above case could bring tremendous bad effects to the place as well as major losses to the people. The Master said, ‘A direction of 5 or 10 degrees might seem to be small on a traditional Chinese compass. However, these small amount of degrees bring major differences as from far, these small degrees will become so big that only a Truth Feng Shui Master can be able to identify it.’
THE CONCLUSION
The Singapore Flyer’s Feng Shui is at average. It will boost Singapore’s image and will continue to attract visitors. However, things will never be smooth. Problems will continue to happen. The cost of remedying the Feng Shui is extremely high as the Ferris Wheel was built facing the wrong direction and it needed to be moved again. This is the reason why Feng Shui of any type of huge projects will need proper planning with thorough, accurate and complete investigations to ensure the particular place receive the Best Good Feng Shui.
